In Utero 2008-9
As with parts of the Birds, Fishwives and Bunnygirls series, these portraits are largely refractions of Rucquoi’s own experiences of being female. What the female body is supposed to look like is always in question. Perhaps the more pertinent question the images raise is that of how we ‘really’ feel. The physical and emotional changes inflicted by puberty, pregnancy and childbirth can be deeply frustrating, frightening and unnerving. The relationship between our psychological state and our bodies is inherently connected and in constant flux.
